Understanding Telehealth Psychiatry
-
Telehealth psychiatry is a virtual appointment with a psychiatric provider through a secure video platform. During the visit, your provider can review your symptoms, medical history, medications, treatment goals, and concerns from the privacy of your home or another safe location.
Telehealth may be used for psychiatric evaluations, medication management, follow-up care, substance use treatment planning, child and adolescent psychiatry, adult psychiatry, and coordination with other providers when appropriate.
-
Telehealth can be a convenient option for patients who want access to psychiatric care without traveling to the office. It may be helpful for busy adults, parents, college students, teens, patients with transportation barriers, or people who live outside the Miami area but are located in Florida or North Carolina.
Some situations may still require in-person care, labs, additional monitoring, or a higher level of care. Your provider will help determine whether telehealth is appropriate for your needs.
-
Santana Mental Health Services offers virtual psychiatric care for eligible patients located in Florida and North Carolina at the time of the visit. Availability may depend on provider licensing, clinical needs, insurance rules, appointment type, medication requirements, and whether in-person care is needed.
-
Before your visit, choose a quiet and private location, make sure your device is charged, check your internet connection, and have your medication list and pharmacy information available. Patients should not join appointments while driving or from public spaces where privacy cannot be maintained.
-
Telehealth may be a good option if you need psychiatric care and prefer a more convenient way to meet with a provider. It may not be appropriate for emergencies, severe safety concerns, active suicidal thoughts with intent, severe intoxication or withdrawal, severe agitation, or symptoms requiring immediate in-person evaluation.
If this is an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

-
A virtual psychiatric evaluation allows your provider to better understand your symptoms, history, current stressors, safety concerns, and treatment goals. After the evaluation, your provider may recommend medication, therapy, follow-up care, additional testing, care coordination, or a higher level of care if needed.
-
Medication management visits are follow-up appointments focused on monitoring progress, reviewing symptoms, checking side effects, adjusting medications when appropriate, and making sure the treatment plan still fits your needs.
Not every patient needs medication, and not every medication is appropriate through telehealth. Your provider will review options, risks, benefits, and any monitoring requirements with you.
-
Santana Mental Health Services provides psychiatric care for substance use and dual diagnosis concerns. When appropriate, medication-assisted treatment may be discussed as part of a broader treatment plan that may also include therapy, monitoring, relapse prevention, and care coordination.
Telehealth may make substance use treatment more accessible, but certain medications, safety concerns, lab needs, pharmacy requirements, or regulations may affect whether care can be fully managed virtually.
-
Adults may use telehealth for psychiatric evaluations, medication management, mood concerns, anxiety, ADHD, trauma-related symptoms, sleep issues, substance use concerns, and ongoing follow-up care. Virtual care can make it easier to stay consistent with treatment while balancing work, school, parenting, or other responsibilities.
-
Telehealth may also be appropriate for children and adolescents. Virtual child and adolescent psychiatry can help with ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood changes, behavioral concerns, emotional regulation, school difficulties, trauma-related symptoms, sleep concerns, and teen substance use concerns.
For minors, a parent or legal guardian is typically involved in the care process. With proper consent, coordination with schools, therapists, pediatricians, or other providers may also be recommended.
